CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

ONCE I WAS OUT of sight of the castle, I popped my earbuds in and dialed Norma.

“Talk to me, Goose,” she answered.

“Mickey’s wife had a relationship with Charles Monaco,” I said.

“Mickey told you that?”

“No. I was poking around on Melody in the Mood’s page last night and found a picture of Monaco and the wife arguing at a Giants game.”

I reached Camelback Road and took a left. My phone beeped. I checked the screen. It was Ziggy.

“Ziggy’s calling,” I said.

“Take it,” Norma said. “I’ll call you later. I’m headed out to talk to the concierge at the party hotel.”

We disconnected and I clicked over to Ziggy’s call. “How’d it go?” I asked, referring to the preliminary hearing Ross had this morning.

“I would say good, all things considered,” Ziggy said.

“Yeah?”

“The judge found probable cause for a manslaughter charge.”

I let out a breath, disappointed. “I thought you were going to say they dropped the charges.”

“No, but this is big. It means they don’t believe they can prove it was premeditated or that Ross’ intent was to kill him.”

“But it still means they think he killed him.”

“Yes, but their case is weak. They rushed to pin it on Ross, probably because of his celebrity status, and I think they wanted to charge him with something while they continue their investigation. The next court date is in three months.”

Traffic was backed up at Scottsdale Road due to an accident. I pulled to a stop behind a motorcycle and rolled down my window to let the cool breeze in. “Did they grant bail?”

“Yes. Ross’ mom is in there now handling it.”

Thinking of what Mickey had told me about Mrs. J’s gambling problem, I asked, “What did they set it at?”

“Two-fifty. Why?”

I filled him in on the highlights of my visit with Mickey Stone.

“That’s interesting,” Ziggy said. “She may be using a bail bondsman. Then she’d only have to come up with ten percent and collateral. I’m more interested in this argument between Mickey’s wife and Charles Monaco. When did it happen?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I’m headed to the stadium now to track down Melody in the Mood about all her pictures. What are you doing?”

“Teach called this morning,” Ziggy said. “He set up a meeting with the private investigator who’s going to oversee our investigation. After I pick up the girls from the stables, I’m going to meet him to hammer out a contract.”

“Stables?”

Ziggy sighed. “The girls decided they want to learn to ride Arabian horses. Who has Arabian horses in the desert? Why can’t they just ride a bike like normal kids? Horses are expensive. And smelly. It’s like riding with a pair of goats after they’re done with their lessons. And did I mention they’re expensive?”

“You did.” Traffic started to move. I let off the brake. “One last thing,” I said. “Any word on Sofia?”

“No. She’s still in the wind. The police have opened a missing persons investigation, though.”

“That’s good.”

“I don’t know. I think they’re hoping to tie her disappearance to Ross.
